Gene editing makes healthier pets.

What I found

Your next pet is a pocket dragon.

What else do people want from animals once changing them becomes possible? Not only better health. Display, novelty, affection, spectacle and the pleasure of owning something extraordinary.

Breeders turn a tiny gliding lizard into the next private-zoo attraction: the pocket dragon. Other animals become larger, more dinosaur-like or strikingly patterned. The pet fad crosses into a market for designed living spectacles.

The same world produces Death Wolf Forest. Genetically engineered glow wolves pursue contestants left to survive by their bushcraft. Viewers argue that the wolves have become too easy to see. A biotechnology possibility has become a television format.

Designer fur returns with conservation funding attached. Animals made for display become part of disputes about taste, status and the uses to which conservation money is put.

A fictional headline from inside the world

Death Wolf Forest fans accuse producers of making the glow wolves too easy to see.
