Speed of Thought

Raised hands prove nothing.

Everyone expects

A human remains in control of the weapon.

What I found

How do you surrender when you can shoot with your hands up?

Guns that aim themselves and fire on a thought, worn on the hip. A raised pair of hands used to prove you couldn’t shoot. Now it proves nothing.

To fire, an officer has to believe three things: there is a weapon, this person means to use it, and the threat justifies deadly force now. When anyone might carry the system under a coat, the first two become guesses.

Compliance changes shape. Suspects have to show their hips, not their hands, and the moment a weapon is revealed is the most dangerous of all, before anyone can prove it’s switched off. Facing an armed criminal, each side thinks it must fire first. Facing an innocent person, the officer is tempted to fire first anyway.

The world adapts around the encounter. The long coat comes back, bullet-resistant and cut to hide a hip-mounted gun. Police wear blur coats that confuse a weapon’s sensors about where the body ends. Parents buy bullet-resistant school uniforms; schools ban them because children overheat.

Original fiction

Twenty Yards

A scene from the world
He moved his wrist in a sequence he would never make by accident, and the safeties clicked off. The guns on his hips were live now, aimed by his mind. The man twenty yards away was doing the same. One gun? Two? Some carried five, though it made sitting down awkward. There would be no reach for the hip. The escalation was in their heads. “Take off your jacket,” he shouted. “Slowly.” “Don’t shoot.” The man was shaking, walking closer. “Please. I don’t want to die.” Close enough now to see the tattoo and the careful stubble. No businessman. The man raised his hands and knelt. “I said take off your jacket, sir. Now!” His radio clicked alive at a thought, then died. He looked down at his chest: fragmented plastic. Then he was looking at the sky, and his hair was wet.
